I used to have way too much time on my hands.
When I was working from home last year, all I could do was sit around and think. I wasn’t seeing many people, wasn’t getting out much… It was bad.
The year before, I was a post-graduate working 30 hours a week at Walmart. I was (kinda) in love with a girl and thinking about her all the time.
Now, I don’t do a ton of thinking.
When I’m on the road, I’ve got at least four people in my ear. It’s hard to sit around and think about much.
When at home, I’m being a loser on Call of Duty all day.
It may sound bad that I’m not thinking much. But thinking is almost always a bad thing.
Thinking to solve problems is good. Or to come up with the right answer.
But with me, like many, thinking means projecting the future or reminiscing on the past.
These may not sound like bad things, either. But both of these activities take us out of the present moment.
The past is the past. Leave it there.
The future will come. You don’t need to get your future life in order before it’s here.
You don’t need to plan your future family or job. Chances are, whatever you want now will likely change by the time the future arrives.
Why waste time thinking about it, then? It’s fiction.
Fiction can be fun. But this year, it’s been nice to live in the moment.
